Take a Deep breath and begin your climb to148 steps to Silk Stocking Row. Also known as West 8th Street. 8th street was given the name Silk Stocking Row when extravagant homes were built in 1898 by the most wealthy. This was there way of flaunting there riches to others in a way a competition on who could build the best of the best. The women living in these homes were rich enough to afford the real silkstockings. Many of these homes still remain and some have been restored to their original beauty. Before these homes were built nothing remained in this small home town after a tornado in 1897 ripped through leaving only one structure standing. When passing by the First Presbyterian Church you are looking at a building that stood the biggest test in Oklahoma. This church was erected in 1894 and remains today located on Silk Stocking Row (West 8th st.). Rumor has it the stairs are haunted. Enjoy the hunt and the exercise!
