Geocache Description:

Start from the Visitors Center and head north on the Hickory Trail. Remember to stay on the trail during this walk. After passing through an expansive prairie, check out the shellbark hickory trees in the wooded area on your way to this cache. Shellbark hickory, a slow-growing but potentially massive tree scattered throughout Ohio, is found in a variety of habitats, but it generally prefers wetter conditions than the closely related shagbark hickory does.

Come see the 1,050-acre Fernald Preserve. The site is open 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. to dusk. The Visitors Center and exhibit area are open Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This preserve provides a unique opportunity to see how efficiently and effectively nature responds to a large-scale ecological restoration effort. The site has amazing wildlife, including muskrats, beaver, and birds, that can often be seen in the wetlands and open water. The woodlands, prairies, and savannahs are home to a variety of mammals and reptiles, as well as native and migratory birds. Please observe all postings while visiting the Fernald Preserve. Pets are not allowed because they often scare the wildlife.

You’re looking for a coolhipwithit signature item . . . (If you know her, this will be easy; if not, it could be much harder.) Permission to place granted by the U.S Department of Energy.
