The Parthenon Constructed around 433 BC, the Parthenon
was built as a temple to the ancient Greek goddess Athena. The
second temple that was erected upon the heights of the Acropolis of
Athens, it replaced an older one previously left in ruins from the
Persian Wars. In addition to being a temple, the Parthenon also
served as the treasury of the Delian League, which eventually
became the Athenian Empire.
