Geocache Description:

The good news is that downtown Chico won’t flood again because of two bypasses that take high water flows during the rainy season around the city instead of through it.
At the Five-Mile dam, Big Chico Creek’s flow is partially diverted into Lindo Channel, or Sandy Gulch, as it was historically known. Lindo Channel is an ephemeral stream that formed as a natural channel on the Chico alluvial fan, but was historically modified for flood control purposes in the early 1960’s. Lindo Channel runs parallel to Big Chico Creek for almost eight miles before rejoining the creek about 2.5 miles from Big Chico Creek’s confluence with the Sacramento River. Lindo Channel is still used as a diversion channel to relieve flood flows in Big Chico Creek. Lindo Channel carries water during the rainy season and is important for groundwater recharge as well as aquatic and riparian habitat.
Another flood control channel, the Sycamore Diversion, was constructed off of Lindo Channel in the early 1960’s. It can be seen running to the northwest at the entrance to Upper Bidwell Park. This diversion brings flood flows off of Lindo Channel to Sycamore Creek, which drains into Mud Creek. Where Lindo Channel splits off at Five-Mile the flow capacity is 14,500 cubic feet per second (cfs), until the Sycamore Diversion split which is capable of receiving 8,500 cfs, leaving the rest of Lindo Channel with the design capacity of 6,000 cfs. These channels divert potentially damaging flood flows around the City of Chico.
Want to stretch your legs or walk the dog? Easy parking at Wildwood Park and the trail head is 100 yards to the east along the top of the levee. Round trip is a flat 2.4 miles and is suitable for everything except roller skates. Muggles are not a problem. Bring your binoculars as there is good birding along the trail. Always above the high water mark.
