The cache is an ammo box. We have several other caches at Willow Creek and decided there were some empty spaces just waiting for caches to fill them. Depending on how much of a hike you want, you can start from any of the parking areas around the lake. Make the full eight-mile hike and pick up all the caches along the way.
Willow Creek SRA offers camping, fishing, boating and (unsupervised) swimming. There are picnic shelters with tables and fire grates. An 8-mile hiking and horseback trail winds through the area. Camping is first-come, first-served, with 100 pads — many with electrical hookups — and drinking water and vault toilets are available. Bird watchers will find a variety of birdlife to enjoy. Anglers will find crappie, bluegill, bass, catfish, walleye, northern pike, tiger musky and bullhead. Parts of the recreation area are open to hunting, in season. Campers must register. Reservations accepted up to 1 year in advance. See more information on the web site, www.ngpc.state.ne.us, click on state parks, then on northeast Nebraska on the map, then Willow Creek.
