Ron's most famous encounter was on May 25th, 1972, at the Civic Center in Omaha, Nebraska. The bout was for the WBC & WBA heavyweight championship against the undefeated titlist "Smokin'" Joe Frazier. Ron lost via technical knock out in the 5th. In 1982, Stander retired at the age of 37, compiling a 37-21-3 record, with 28 knockouts. He remains to this day, the closest Iowa has come to a major heavyweight championship in boxing.
