Castellfollit de la Roca - El Mirador Traditional Geocache

Castellfollit de la Roca és un poble d'aproximadament 1.000 habitants i menys d'1km2 de superfície, fet que el converteix en un dels municipis més petits en extensió de Catalunya. El petit terme municipal està limitat per la confluència dels rius Fluvià i Toronell, enmig dels quals s'aixeca l'espectacular cinglera basàltica.

El perfil de l'església i les cases penjant damunt de la cinglera basàltica, a tocar el precipici, s'ha convertit en una de les imatges més fotografiades i pintades de Catalunya; però és també un magnífic mirador natural des del qual es poden observar les valls dels dos rius.

L'espadat de basalt on s'assenta el poble té més de 50 m d'alçària i gairebé un quilòmetre de longitud, i és la conseqüència directa de l'acció erosiva dels rius Fluvià i Toronell sobre les restes dels corrents de lava procedents de les erupcions volcàniques que van tenir lloc fa milers d'anys.

El barri vell de Castellfollit de la Roca, d'origen medieval, està format per places i carrers estrets i ombrejats. Les cases són, en la seva major part, construïdes amb pedra volcànica.

A l'extrem de la cinglera, trobem la plaça-mirador Josep Pla. Aquesta balconada ens ofereix una espectacular panoràmica i ens permet entendre la posició estratègica del poble i les seves qualitats naturals per a la defensa.

En un costat de la cinglera hi ha l'antiga església de Sant Salvador, de la qual es té constància ja en el segle XIII. En l'església s'hi van fer celebracions litúrgiques fins que durant la Guerra Civil fou destruïda. El mal estat en què queda la construcció féu que, una vegada acabada la Guerra, es decidís construir una nova església a la part nova del poble i s'abandonés l'antic edifici. A mitjan anys 80, per iniciativa dels veïns, es va recuperar l'antiga església com a centre cultural.

Translation): Castellfollit de la Rocais a village of approximately 1.000 inhabitants and less than 1 km2 of surface, fact that converts it into one of the smallest towns in extension of Catalonia. The small municipal term is limited by the confluence of the rivers Fluvià and Toronell, in the middle of which the spectacular basaltic long cliff is raised.

The profile of the church and the houses hanging on the basaltic long cliff, to touch the precipice, it has become one of the more photographed images and paintings of Catalonia; but it is also a magnificent natural oriel from which the valleys of both rivers can be observed.

The cliff of basalt where the village is settled it has more than 50 m of height and almost a kilometer of length, and the direct consequence of the erosive action is from the Fluvià rivers and Toronell about the subtractions of the currents of lava coming from the volcanic eruptions that took place makes thousands of years.

The old neighborhood of Castellfollit de la Roca, of mediaeval origin, is formed by squares and narrow streets and shadings. The houses are constructed with volcanic stone.

In the extreme of the long cliff, we find the square Josep Pla. This large balcony offers us a spectacular panoramic view and allows us to understand the strategic position of the village and its natural qualities for the defense.

In a side of the long cliff there is the antique church of Sant Salvador, of which evidence has itself already in the 13th century. In the church liturgical celebrations were had until during the Civil War it was destroyed. The badly been one in which the construction remains made, once the War finished, it be decided to construct a new church in the new part of the village and be abandoned. In the middle of years 80, on initiative of the neighbors, the ancient church was retrieved as a cultural center.
