Today as in days of old, the hot springs has drawn many people to Pagosa Springs. Although the springs drew the early settlers to the area, it was the forest’s pine and fur that gave most of them a living.
This cache is located close to the northern edge of a sawmill town known as “South Pagosa”. The home immediately north of this cache was owned by Alexander T. Sullenberger who was part owner of the Pagosa Lumber Company. Investors in the Pagosa Lumber Company were responsible for bringing the railroad to Pagosa Springs. The first train steamed into Pagosa Springs on Saturday, October 13, 1900. While its principle purpose was to transport lumber, it also carried passengers, mail, and various types of freight.
Homes were built around the mill for the workers and their families. Along with the homes, Sullenberger also built a commissary store to provide for his employees. Town merchants resented his attempts to recapture the money he paid his workers through his company store. This became a political sore spot for Sullenberger. On April, 1912, Sullenberger sold his interest in the Pagosa Lumber Company and retired.
Today, part of the sight of the Pagosa Lumber Company is owned by the local school district. The athletic fields were once part of the old mill. Pagosa Springs High School, built in 1998, is located on approximately the same sight as the homes of many of the mill employees. The original train station is located at the corner of Durango and 7th Street. (Waypoint: N37 15.880, W107 00.975)
