On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight (eastern time), 24
satellites around the globe processed their new orders and
instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved 10-fold. Tens of
thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant
upgrade.
On May 3rd Dave Ulmer placed a black bucket in the woods near
Beaver Creek, OR. Along with a logbook & pencil, he left
various prize items (swag?). He shared the waypoint of his "stash"
with the online community.
That "original stash" is still in place and a "must-do"
caching destination for cachers everywhere. It, along with
Groundspeak Headquarters in Seattle and the Ape Cache in WA, are
now called the "Trifecta" of geocaching.
Come out and join local cachers as we
celebrate this momentous occasion.
We'll meet around 2 PM and stay until we are
finished.
Come with your stories about YOUR adventures-newbies and
old-timers alike. Enjoy a nice meal along with your friends who
also love this sport. There will be a birthday cake and maybe even
some surprises. Watch the page for further details. This event will
be one of many held worldwide over the anniversary weekend.
You can make this into an almost day-long Birthday Party if
you wish! Earlier in the day, there is another Happy Birthday Event
in Franklin, TN and in Parkers Crossroads, TN.

Thanks to Willwgw for the following:
Over the past years the geocaching fun has
continually been mounting And now it is Happy Birthday, Geocaching
– 10 years and Counting. At midnight on May 2, 2000, 24
satellites gave us all much more accurate access And since then we
have all been looking for “little treasures” like we
are possessed! It all started with Dave Ulmer’s black bucket
near Beaver Creek But now throughout the world there are thousands
of “stashes” that we can seek. The small beginning has
now grown worldwide with headquarters in Seattle And now we gather
together in small groups to share a story of our smiley or DNF
battle. We love to go find all types of containers filled with
their swag, Then we log on to geocaching.com and post our own brag.
We depend upon our GPSr’s to find the waypoint, So we can add
to our numbers and ourselves we anoint. And while we are doing all
of this; the fun never ends Plus, on top of it all; we make many
new and long-lasting friends. To celebrate all of this, we’re
having a get-together And by the time this date comes up, we should
have really good weather. We need all you old-timers and you
newbies alike Come on out and share with us your latest Geocaching
strike. Say hello to some old ones and maybe make some new friends,
‘Cause when friends are together – everybody wins! If
you are looking for some fun and to see some friends that are
really enthusiastic Then you need to check out our party;
it’s gonna be “Willie, willie fantastic!”
