Howells Pond Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

NorthofForty: I have decided to archive this cache as I have not been able to check on it regularly. Perhaps someone else can place a new cache near this lovely little pond when the time is right.
Thanks to all who have looked for and found it!

Geocache Description:

Semi-path around a pond, lots of old pine down, three creeks to cross.

We found this little pond when exploring after finding the Hartland Hollow and Milo Coe caches so you might want to check them out too. Follow the signs for Howells Pond from Route 20 in West Hartland. You can either walk or paddle to this cache. There is a boat launch and picnic table at the parking site.

If paddling, especially with young ones, be aware there is nothing stopping you from going over the little dam nearby. It will be a short paddle and I got wet up to my ankles getting out on shore. I heard that trout, bass and pickerel have been stocked in the pond; we saw fish jumping. Internal combustion engines are not allowed.

If walking, take the trail counter-clockwise from the parking lot. The trail is not marked but clear until the first of three creeks. After that the trail becomes vague, comes and goes, but it is fairly easy to follow along the pond, a bit of bushwhacking here and there. Along the northwest section is a nearby road; you may find it easier to take this back to the parking area. We rated the terrain a 2 because of the lack of clearly defined trail. Circling the pond is a short .7 miles.

There were no regulations about dogs noted at the parking site. This cache will be more difficult in winter with lots of snow.

We have placed as FTF: a metal fly box with home-made (not by us) hand-tied flies and a $10.00 Gift Certificate to Upcountry in Pine Meadow. Other items are Plano storage boxes perfect for little fishing gear, a long stringer, a poncho, sun block, trash bags and a few other items.

This is our first hide. We enjoyed placing it and hope you enjoy finding it.
