Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Here's a geocache located near the second tower of the Sandia Peak Tramway, elevation 8,750 feet.
If you go, prepare for a steep ascent with at least one hands-and-knees rock scramble. You won't need specialized equipment, but you will need sustained endurance and lots of water. No trails will take you directly to the tower, so you'll be bushwhacking uphill for some time to get to the cache. As part as the challenge, I'm going to leave the job of determining the best approach up to you. Be sure to consult your favorite topo map carefully and plan your trip before you head out.

Take a look at the mountain and you'll find you can't really walk in a straight line to get to this one. The tower is perched on a high stone edifice that'll take some careful route choices to deal with. Your GPS won't help you find the route to the top; a good map will, so I suggest only using the GPS once you're on top and in the area.

The view from the top is spectacular, take time to enjoy a well-earned rest once you get there. The cache itself is located in a rock crevice southeast of the tower. It's a two-foot length of 3-inch Schedule 40 tubing, so bring small stuff. Please note that to the passing tram passenger the container might look like an explosive device; you might want to keep it hidden while the trams pass so as to avoid any suspicion that you are about to commit an act of terror on the tower. (Thanks to Southwick and Zygodactyl for noting this.) I posted some photos in a note log on June 11, you might want to print those off to use if you get stuck and can't find it- It would really stink to come back empty handed!

A few reminders of how to prepare: This is a longish off-trail hike, so start early and bring raingear, sunscreen, and LOTS of water. You really don't want to wear shorts for this. My trip to the top took almost all day (round trip) and was very strenuous. Mind the cacti, snakes, pointy plants and too much sun exposure. Most importantly, trust in your intuition and be safe.

If you have any questions, email me and I'll be happy to give hints or clarifications. I hope you enjoy the challenge, and good luck!

Hiked the foothills trail for a ways south from the tram base, then Domingo Baca canyon up as far as that would take me, and finally scrambled up some very steep, dense slopes to eventually make it around the east side of the precipice. Very tough climb and a very rainy day, but that just added to the beauty of the surroundings. Placed my first cache, Olympian Altar, on the way.

I downloaded this map of the Sandias to my GPS, which helped a little bit, mostly in finding canyons; I think it will come in very handy for the TWA Canyon cache: (visit link)

What a great place for a cache! I've been wanting to do this for a year and finally did it today -- minus the 3 Gals. The hike was awesome and the view was spectacular. I took the Domingo Baca route and although it probably is longer than some other routes, being alone, I didn't want to attempt anything that could get me in trouble.

What can I say - a magnificent hike! 4 hrs. 12 mins. going up including time to get the three lower caches around Tower 1. 1 hr. 36 mins. to get down again. Since I used just over an hour getting the first three caches I'd guess I would have got up there in about 3 1/2 hours going straight at it.

I would recommend to anyone who hasn't already bagged the lower caches doing them on the way as they provide a good warm up for the actual climb and the route up the far side of the canyon from "East of Tower 1" is a good one. That is if you don't mind busting brush and climbing up boulders. If you do mind it, then stay home and watch six hours of TV while running in place and doing push-ups because no matter which way you go you will do both, ha ha!

I spent a total of 6 hrs. 14 mins on the hike today and feel like I took one of the shortest and most direct approaches. Maybe not. I made myself rest for 20 mins. on the way up and spent 40 mins. at the site having lunch, etc. Coming from Domingo Baca Canyon seems too long but appears to be less steep in the lower approach. It sure was tempting to go down that way though, ha ha! Anybody that is considering this let me know and I'll share my waypoints and route if you want.

The maintenance man yelled at me from atop the tram that, "There's a geocache in those rocks right there - go for it!" At least I think that's what he said, ha ha! I was way ahead of him! I got his picture and will post it with others later.

This is not a climb to do without thorough preparation. I analyzed every log, analyzed my route until I dreamed about it, and have been conditioning for this since September. It paid off today! This may or may not be the "Holy Grail" of Sandia geocaches but it sure one of them!

TFTH! Everything is in relatively good shape. Camera is full. I took the red bandana and left an Air Special Ops coin I picked up in Embudito Canyon sometime back.

God, I love this stuff! Geocache on!

Wow, well this was one hard cache to get too. I got to it finally with my buddy Erfunden. This was our second try since we had to stop short of it in november last time. It was a really fun hike, but rough as well. Water is very important! Thanks for the awesome cache!

I got it this time! Schaferhund and I nabbed it.
We went up the ridge because that was the way we went down last time. It did provide a less steep slope and a couple of places to rest in the shade. We went down the little valley west of the tower, following it into Domingo Baca. I'm thinking this is the easiest way down.
A fella hopped off the tram car just as we got to the top so we had to wait till he finished checking the tower and rode away again before we could find the cache. The contents of the cache was a little damp. And we took the last picture on the camera.
Thanks for a wonderful cache!

Oh, and listen to what the man says, don't wear shorts!
If you want an idea of what the view from the top looks like, here's a link to a rather poorly assembled (and huge! this will take a while to download!) 360 panorama from the top --> (visit link)
