In Piazza de' Giudici, sulla spalletta dell'Arno, si trova una lapide che ricorda un drammatico episodio avvenuto nel 1530, durante l' assedio degli imperiali alla città.
Carlo Cappello era all' epoca l' ambasciatore della Repubblica Veneta a Firenze; fiero alleato dei fiorentini, decise di restare in città per combattere al fianco dei cittadini proprio nel momento di estremo bisogno, quando la città era completamente circondata dal nemico e le speranze di conservare la libertà erano ormai ridotte al minimo.
Quel giorno Carlo Cappello era in sella al suo fido destriero e stava transitando proprio nel mezzo della piazza: doveva infatti recarsi a Palazzo della Signoria per conferire con i notabili.
E proprio quel giorno, nello stesso momento, una bombarda degli imperiali posta sulle colline, nelle vicinanze della Torre del Gallo, sparò un colpo di mortaio in direzione della città.
L' aria fu spezzata dal sibilo del proiettile che si avvicinava rapidamenente, fu un attimo: l'ordigno esplose in tutta la sua violenza proprio sotto la pancia del povero animale che rimase dilaniato ma che, proprio per la sua mole, salvò la vita al cavaliere che rimase miracolosamente incolume.
Carlo Cappello, in riconoscenza, fece seppellire pubblicamente il cavallo con tutti i finimenti di velluto sulla Piazza d' Arno, ponendo a ricordo una lapide, scritta in latino, la cui traduzione suona all' incirca così: "Qui sono le ossa del cavallo di Carlo Cappello, legato veneto. Oh cavallo che non sarai dimenticato, questo sepolcro e questo monumento, il tuo padrone, non ingrato, ti diede per i tuoi meriti. 13 marzo 1530, mentre la città è assediata".

In De' Giudici square, on the parapet of Arno river, there is a plaque which recalls a tragic incident occurred in 1530, during the imperial siege at the town.
Carlo Cappello was the ambassador of the Venetian Republic in Florence; proud ally of the Florentines, he decided to stay in town to fight alongside its citizens in time of extreme need, when the city was completely surrounded by the enemy and hopes of preserve freedom were now reduced to a minimum.
That day Carlo Cappello was riding his horse and was through in the middle of the square had to go to Palazzo della Signoria to confer with the chiefs.
At the same time, a bombard placed by the imperial on the hills, near the Torre del Gallo, fired a mortar strike in the direction of the city.

Oh! horse ,you will not be forgotten, your owner, not ungrateful, built this tomb and monument for your merits. March 13 1530, while the city is besieged. "
