Burhs Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

prontopup: I went fishing today at Glenn Springs. The geocache is virtually impossible to get to and the vegetation is thick around it, including poison ivy. The container is brittle and cracked. The lake is so filled with seaweed around the bank that a hunt by boat is nearly impossible. Its time to retire this one. Thanks to those who hunted it!

Geocache Description:

Regular size cache located at Glenn Springs Lake in Tipton County, Tennessee.

Burhs, burgs, burgh, boroughs - they all are variations of a term generally meant to describe a community. When you look around Glenn Springs Lake, you see a forest community. Here thrives plants and animals of all kinds and descriptions. And, just like in a community of people, the residents of the forest are interdependent upon one another in many ways. Take time to look around and “see” the forest community.

Glenn Springs Lake is a 310 acre lake in Tipton County, Tennessee. This is one of the nicest lakes overseen by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

While you are taking a moment to enjoy the forest and bask in its wonders, you might want to hunt this cache. You are looking for a large Lock-N-Lock container with camouflage. Watch out for the usual forest residents: poison ivy, thorns, snakes, mosquitos, rodents, ticks, spiders, and assorted critters.

As the crow flies, this cache is not very far from another one called “Dogwood.” Unfortunately, there is a large body of water which will prevent you from traveling in a straight line. There are several ways to approach this cache. First, you can take the old trail from the trail head until it runs out and bushwhack the remainder of the way. This way will cause you to walk more than 1/4 mile (and possibly further depending upon your approach). Or you can bushwhack straight from the trail head which could reduce the distance to as little as roughly 1/5 mile (again, it depends upon your approach) but which causes you to walk through dense woods. Or you can rent a boat and paddles (which are likely to cost about $15 total) and paddle to the cache which reduces your walking distance to about 150 ft. (of course, there is paddling distance to take into account plus the cost of the boat). The lake is very shallow here and full of weeds which can make even rowing a challenge at times. Swimming is not allowed and this rule is vigorously enforced! IF YOU USE ANY BOAT past finders of this cache have reported that YOU WILL NEED a valid TN fishing license, some type of fishing equipment, and floatation device according to TWRA rules (I don't make the rules, I just report them)!

Remember that this is primarily a fishing lake. Please do not do anything to disturb those folks fishing in the area.

Terrain difficulty is due to lack of a trail, some slippery sloping landscape, and dense woods (did I mention thorns and poison ivy?). Cache difficulty is due to camouflaged container and heavy tree cover which will give your GPSr fits. Also, the mosquitos grow quite large in this area when the weather warms up.

The coordinates were updated on December 21, 2008, and represent averaging over 550 times using a Garmin 60CXs.
