Geocache Description:

This is a two part multi.

WP1 is close to the parking area and has the coordinates for the final. The final is about .8 mile hike, one way. The road is easy to follow and is either hard packed dirt or crushed stone. There is one dip in the road about 20' across that may have some water in it depending on how wet the area is. Make sure you have bug spray. Kelley's Island is part of the Upper French Creek wildlife area and Public Hunting Grounds. Wear orange during the gun season. There used to be a huge house on Kelley's Island, built by the Kelley's of course. When Sloughfooot was a youngster we would explore the house which was falling down and had coyotes living in it. The basement was dirt and was covered with animal bones. It was the perfect Halloween house, very spooky and very isolated from all neighbors. It was a popular spot with teenagers looking for a cheap scare. When the DNR took control of the property the old house was burned and buried and there are only a few furrows and stones to identify where the old house stood, there is nothing left except the beautiful view that attracted the Kelley's to start with. The final is very close to where the old house was. The water you will see to the south and west is Date's Mill Pond a very good fishing hole summer and winter. This is a good place to take a picnic and the dog and kids and spend a little time, it is not a grab and go cache. If you are standing at the top of the highest point and look to the SE you can see the top of a silo on the farm where Sloughfoot grew up.. On 8/30/2007 I had a chance to speak to a gentlman named Bill Mulhern, age 82 who currently lives in Montello. He said that the Kelley that had owned the island and built the house was his grandfather. Mr Kelley was a secretary with the Barnum and Baileys Circus and Bill could remember his grandfather giving them free tickets to the B&B Circus. Bill couldn't remember how the property was sold and ended up being bought by the DNR. I personally can remember when the land was owned by Andy Turner and it was from his estate that it went to the DNR. Cache has been approved by Pat Kaiser of the Poynette Office of the DNR.
