Out To Pasture Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: When it announced that Anza Borrego Desert State Park would no longer allow geocaches, this cache was disabled in hopes that we could come to an arrangement where some geocaches could remain in the Park. Many years have passed and the situation has not changed and as this cache owner now seems to be inactive, I am archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

Part way up a canyon leading to the Inner Pasture area of the east San Diego Desert, off S-2.

The cache is an ammo box about 12-15 feet above the stream bed/trail. You are halfway to the inner pasture so you might as well continue on until you reach it if you have never seen it. Inner Pasture (and the unnamed canyon) are Bureau of Land Management property, and inner Pasture was a grazing lease for a hundred years but this is discontinued as of a few years ago. But you will still see evidence of cattle and barbed wire fences. I always imagined this miracle oasis in there, but it is just more desert. (See Warning Below)

Park around milepost 41 on Highway S-2, around 32 54.208, 116 14.865. There is a very unused jeep trail up to the power lines following a broad sandy wash. The hike is about 1.2 miles one way, and the altitude change is 1066 feet to 1435 at the cache, but there are no steep places. There is a 3 foot rock ledge that is easily climbed about a mile into the path.

Cautions and Warnings: Be prepared for the desert with plenty of water, sunscreen, etc. Dress for the weather. We suggest October through May for this hike. MAJOR CAUTION: It turns out this is a route for illegal alien smuggling. If you hear anyone coming down trail, especially speaking Spanish, turn around and head out. Don't go alone, but in a group large enough to protect yourselves. There have been instances of hikers and campers being robbed in remote areas. The route is most active at night in the full moon, so don't do it then. We did it the morning after the full moon and found dozens of water jugs (empty) and discarded food, clothes, and blankets. It had rained 4 days earlier so we know it is currently active. Also, when the Sheriff or Border Patrol will run your plates if they come by your parked vehicle, so pay those parking tickets.

Making this a Cache In-Trash Out hike would be a great help to the Park and to future visitors.
