You are looking at the crane which is all that remains of the “New” Jamestown Railway station. The green shed which is now part of the wash-down bay for semi-trailers and road trains used to be the goods shed. If you look about 100m south along the railway line you should be able to see the remains of the passenger platform and a pile of grass covered rubble which used to be the station building.
The new station was built in 1970 when the new Indian Pacific line was built and stayed open until the early 1990’s when passenger trains ceased to operate on this line after SA Railways was sold to Australian National Railways. The Indian Pacific still passes through on a regular basis but does not stop. East-West freight trains and iron ore trains to Broken Hill pass through here every day. It is a very busy line so be careful if crossing the tracks. Watch small children at all times.
The original railway station, which is still standing, is now the Jamestown Museum and is located opposite the Bowling Green.
