Geocache Description:

In view of Smuttynose Island, rumored site of Blackbeard’s honeymoon & treasure stash; also of the famous axe murders of 1873 of Karen & Anethe Christensen, slain while men of the household were in Portsmouth. Their sister Maren, only witness to the incident, escaped & later testified at the trial of Louis Wagner. Today doubt & speculation abound as to the verdict & execution of the accused. The story is recounted in Celia Thaxter’s A Memorable Murder, & Anita Shreve’s The Weight of Water.

Rustic Star Island, among the rocky, windy Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire, is a non-profit retreat and conference center. The Star Island Corporation has owned and operated the island as a religious and educational facility since 1915 and welcomes geocaching visitors. Steeped in history as a fishing community since the early 1600’s, Star Island has become a respite from the hectic pace of life for generations of families attending week-long conferences throughout the summer. For information about visiting for a day, a night, or up to a week, and how to get to Star Island, go to the starisland.org website. Once there, enjoy wandering about the island and its paths (wandering from paths means encountering poison ivy) and relax in a rocking chair on the porch as you wait for the boat to return you to the mainland. (This is one of four caches placed with the permission of the management of Star Island. Cache is a typical ammo can.)
