Geocache Description:

The 1. World War cemetery lies above Bohinjska Bistrica on the Rebro viewpoint hill.

During the 1. World War Bohinj was an important base behind Austro-Hungarian lines in the period 1915-1917. The Bohinj railway was the most important supply route for the northern positions of Austro-Hungarian 5th Army in the Tolmin bridge area. Two military hospitals operated in Bohinjska Bistrica from May 1915 until the end of 1917. Zois manor housed Field Hospital No. 1506 (Feldspittal No. 1506), where the wounded were treated. Patients suffering from contagious diseases were treated in Balassa Szarmat Reserve Hospital (Reserve Spittal Balassa Szarmat), popularly called »Špital« pod Rebrom (Hospital below Rebro). Wounded soldiers and patients were conveyed by rail from the Tomin bridge area, while some were also brought from the battlefield in the Krn range. The dead were buried here until the end of 1917 when both hospitals moved closer to the battlefield of Piava river. The cemetery comprises 285 marked graves where soldiers of all nations of the monarchy were put to rest (202 infantry, 55 technical units and various services, 19 artillery and 9 Russian POW) and 12 unmarked graves of unknown soldiers.

Access: there is ample parking available in Bohinjska Bistrica or close to the Kobla ski pistes. Follow signs for the cemetery and marked trail to Črna prst at WP1. Cemetery is also accessible from Zois manor or on the way to or from Bistrica spring.

Cache is a classic magnetic nano. This is quiet and modest place and cache is in accordance with that.
