Hieroglyphic Canyon Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

mtn-man: I'm sorry, but you cannot change a traditional cache to a virtual. I have changed the cache type back and archived this cache. There is no verification questions so this is just a view. A view is not a cache. This is listed in the guidelines.

Sorry,

Geocache Description:

Located in the foothills on the South West side of the Superstition mountains, East of Apache Junction, Arizona. Approximately a 4 mile round trip hike.

This is a popular day hike trail. Not too difficult but a good pair of boots will make your trip more enjoyable. I rated it as a 2 due to the fact that the cache is stashed a short distance off the beaten path.

Note: Bring lots of water in the hot months.

The Trailhead for Hieroglyphic Canyon is accessed through residential neighborhoods.

  • Take US 60 East to Kings Ranch Road.
  • Turn North on Kings Ranch Road and follow for 2.8 miles to Baseline Road.
  • Turn East on Baseline Road and follow 0.2 miles to Mohican.
  • Turn North on Mohican and follow 0.4 miles to Valley View Road.
  • Turn West on Valley View Road and follow for 1.4 miles. (Curves and turns into Whitetail Road)
  • At the intersection of Whitetail Road and Cloud View Road turn East and follow 0.4 miles to end.
There is parking at this point (N 33 23.379 W 111 25.599). The Trailhead is located on the East side of the parking area and proceeds due East. The path is obvious. A short distance from the Trailhead is a gate. This is the first time I have seen it locked. Climbing over seemed to be the norm for the 20 or so people I saw there today. Follow the path for approx. 2 miles will bring you to the real cache. Covering the canyon walls are numerous petroglyphs or pictographs. Archaeologists date these ranging from 200 to 2000 years old. Snow melt and rain bring water down through this canyon and there are several pools, usually becoming stagnant in the hot weather.

The cache container is a small, green ammunition can (standard 7.62 ammo can). The can is labeled "GEOCACHE" along with the coordinates. The cache contains miscellaneous items related to hiking. The cache is located on top of a large rock, surrounded by rocks with a rock on top. The can is slightly visible. I'll give better clues in the spoilers since basically, the whole canyon is rocks.
