We now leave the story of the Ringbearer as he passes through the tunnels at the top of the stairs of Cirith Ungol and turn our attention to the happenings in the lands of Rohan and Gondor.
When we last left Gandalf and company, they had just recovered Saruman's cache with clues to Sauron's plans. They discovered that Sauron had amassed armies much larger than any had imagined and was actively mobilizing to march on Minas Tirith, the White City of Gondor.
With its multicolored banners flying high in the breeze and it's white facade glinting in the sun, Minas Tirith has shone like a beacon standing in the way of Sauron and the darkness oozing out of Mordor. Through the blood and sweat of the men of Gondor has the remainder of Middle Earth been kept free.
Though as Gandalf now knows, Sauron has the center of his eye fixed on Minas Tirith, and they must be warned! Gandalf and Pippin take their leave from Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and the men of Rohan and make haste to Minas Tirith to warn them of the coming onslaught.
Gandalf and Pippin are not so well received in Minas Tirith however, as the Steward there has all but given up hope. He has learned of Sauron's plan and is doing nothing to prepare the city that has stood as a pillar of good in the face of evil for thousands of years.
The attitude of the Steward raises a red flag in Gandalf's mind, and he knows he must do something himself. He sends Pippin to climb to the very top of the city where there is a beacon of fire that must be lit to send a signal to Rohan that Gondor calls for aid. There is also a cache near the beacon that may help you along the way.
