Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of caches that we plan to place along the West Branch of the Susquehanna between Shawville and Keating.

There are several ways to get to this cache, but the easiest is to canoe or kayak the West Branch of the Susquehanna. The cache is not recommended for inexperienced paddlers. Other ways to get to the cache would require over one mile of bushwhacking over steep terrain or by paddling upstream.

The nearest upstream canoe launch is located at Rolling Stone, and the nearest downstream launch is at Karthaus. These launches are about 11 miles apart as far as the river goes, but only about 8 miles by road.

The West Branch of the Susquehanna contains some whitewater, with the Moshannon Falls being the most difficult section (Class II). It is not recommended to paddle this section if the gage at Karthaus reads less than 2.0 feet (too low). Unless you are a very experienced paddler, it is not recommended if the gage reads more than about 5.0 feet (starting to get too high). The real-time gage reading at Karthaus can be found at: (visit link)

The cache is located on river right about halfway between the end Moshannon Falls and Wood Rock (a large rock in the river). Once you get through the rapids, head to the shore to find the cache and bail out your canoe. The cache is an ammo box located far enough up the bank that it should not get washed away in high water, but not so far that extensive bushwhacking is needed.

About 150 years ago, the West Branch of the Susquehanna was a superhighway for log rafts heading to markets downstream. Locations along the river such as hazards and landmarks were known as "Rafting Points" - hence the name of this cache. More information about log rafting and canoeing on the West Branch can be found in an old boy scout guide to the river at (visit link)

Note: The cache is found on PA Game Lands. Between November 15 and December 15 (except on Sundays), you must “wear a minimum of 250 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange-colored material on the head, chest and back combined or, in lieu thereof, a hat of the same colored material. The material shall be worn so it is visible in a 360° arc." All other PA Game Commission rules and regulations apply.
