The Mug! Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

GHeiny: With the tool non-functional and not easily replaced because of changing technology .... it is time to say farewell to the mug. This was one I truly enjoyed ... I hope you enjoyed finding it as much as I did reading your logs.

Geocache Description:

The Cup,
Hockey's Holy Grail,
and yes ... Lord Stanley's Mug.

There are actually 3 "Stanley Cups." The original bowl (presented by Lord Stanley); the presentation cup (constructed in 1963); and the replica (produced in 1993). It is unusual among trophies, in that it has the names of all of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved on its chalice.

Until 1984 engraving errors on the cup weren't corrected. The first correction dates back to the glory years of the Edmonton Oilers. Then owner Peter Pocklington submitted his father's name, Basil Pocklington. It was later "X'ed" out (and is not on the replica cup).

Since then, there have been corrections to spelling mistakes on the cup. One of those errors has a local tie-in. NHLer Eric Staal's name had to be corrected when it had been engraved as Eric Staaal.

This cache is near the "home rink" of the Staal brothers in the hamlet of Stanley.

Simply put, your task is to get your name on "the Mug."
