Geocache Description:

The following information came from an archived cache (GCMANX) located near here. Thank you Wis Wild Weasel for finding the information.

The year: 1952.........Spring Time

The Place: Just over there.

In 1952, Bill (Billy to his friends) Murphy and his girl friend Becky Lynn Mayer were driving back to her folks place after attending the Spring Fling dance at their high school. The drive home should've been uneventful. It was not!

The past winter, this area received an abnormal amount of snow. So much that travel was done only when and if an emergency arose. It was just too difficult to get anywhere. Well, along came spring and with it temperatures so warm that nothing good could come of it. Nothing did.

The river rose and rose but ever slight enough to not seem too alarming. By the end of the day, this day, the temps dropped to a level well below freezing allowing all concerned to breathe a sigh of relief.

As Billy always said, "if something can go wrong, something will go wrong!" Something went wrong. Our young couple, talking, laughing, and still very full of excitement from the evenings events, inadvertently took the river road home. There were other ways, there's always other ways but this night they took the way most well known to them. Had they not been so enamored, things might have turned out differently.

As they drove around the curve, this curve, their car went into a skid. Billy failed to notice the ice sheet that engulfed the road. He did his best to correct the path of his car but to no avail! It plunged into the icy bay. Billy quickly opened his car door, icy water flooding in but he knew it was their only chance of escape once the car went under. He reached across to Becky Lynn trying to help her open her door. It would not budge! He tried to guide her out his door. SHE would not budge! With icy water covering them and fear setting in, Billy made a bold decision. Billy swam around the car grabbing onto the door that was confining his love. He pulled and pulled, finally breaking the grip of this now icy chunk of steel.

Billy pushed Becky to the surface, knowing full well she needed to get air as fast as she could. After all, she'd been trapped in that car for a long time! Billy, overcome with relief after seeing Becky Lynn freed, hesitated for a split second before sending himself up. Sadly, that would be his last decision. Billy became entangled in the car.

Today, the spot where Billy and Becky slid off the road is known as Billy's Bay. It's right there, you can't miss it. Rumor has it the ghost of Billy is still there. The river never ever rose over the road again. By design or by fate, it's hard to say. What can be said though, is that if the conditions are right, when you're at the cache stash spot, you might just see Billy in Billy's Bay!!

Why TNBL:? Because it is easy to search our entire boat landing series of caches by searching TNBL: at the bottom of the webpage www.geocaching.com/seek. The TNBL Series will introduce you to the many boat landing and water accesses around the area. Caches are set up as Park and Grabs and hopefully not so easy that you lose interest, but as you will see some areas are hard to find places to put a cache, that will last, leaving little to the imagination. You will need to bring your own pen and please share pictures especially if you catch any fish.

VERY IMPORTANT!!! Please re-hide these caches well. They are located in high muggle traffic areas.

We hope you enjoy this series.
