Denna plats är av många ansedd som Stockholms vackraste. Åt öster
syns Riddarfjärden, med Stadshuset till vänster och Söders höjder
till höger. I fonden ligger Riddarholmen med Birger Jarls torn,
Wrangelska palatset där Svea hovrätt huserar och Riddarholmskyrkan
med sin karakteristiska gjutjärnsspira.
Västerbron är en så kallad bågbro med valvbågar av nitade
stålbalkar. Vägbanan befinner sig drygt 30 meter över vattenytan
vid den högsta punkten.
Bron öppnades för trafik 1935. På den tiden trafikerades den även
av spårvagnar, som man kan höra Monica Zetterlund sjunga om i
"Sakta vi gå genom stan" med text av Beppe Wolgers.
Några tiotals meter norr om cachen går landskapsgränsen mellan
Södermanland och Uppland.
OBS! Man behöver ej korsa vägbanan för att komma åt cachen.

The view from Västerbron ("The Western Bridge") is considered one
of the most beautiful in Stockholm. Facing east, you can see the
brick tower of the City Hall, with its three crowns on top, on your
left. On your right you can see the heights of Södermalm and in the
middle the island of Riddarholmen with Birger Jarl's Tower, the
Wrangel Palace, in which the court of appeal resides, and
Riddarholmskyrkan (the Riddarholmen church) with it's
characteristic hollow iron tower.
Västerbron is an arch bridge, whose archs are constructed of
riveted steel beams, and was opened in 1935.
The distance from the road surface to the water is a little over 30
metres.
You do NOT have to cross the road to get to the cache!

För en vecka sedan upptäckte folk från gatukontoret, som gjorde en
inspektion av bron undertill, ett mystiskt föremål som hängde under
bron. De larmade polisen, som skickade ut a) en polishelikopter, b)
en polisbåt och c) stockholmspiketen. Helikoptern hovrade strax
under bron, för att försöka utröna vad det var och hur den var
fastsatt. När de kommit fram till att det antagligen inte var något
farligt fick en polisman fira ner sig från brokanten och genom att
gunga lyckades han nå föremålet. För att få loss det kapades vajern
som det hängde i, under det att polisbåten väntade nedanför ifall
föremålet skulle ramla i vattnet. Därefter togs Det Mystiska
Föremålet med till polisstationen, där kriminalteknisk undersökning
gav vid handen att det rörde sig om en geocache, varpå Piketen
reglementsenligt signerade loggboken (se bild).
Åklagare kom fram till att inget brott hade begåtts, varför
cachen återlämnades till ägaren. Men på grund av all uppståndelse
kommer cachen inte sättas tillbaka igen - denna grandiosa muggling
får bli ett värdigt slut på en stolt cache. Därför publiceras även
bilder på var den var placerad, till nöje för dem som hittat den,
inte hittat den eller funderat på att leta efter den, men inte
kommit till skott.
För protokollet kan nämnas att man inte behövde varken helikopter
eller firningsutrustning för att komma åt cachen - det räckte med
en pinne från närmsta park, om man inte hade tillräckligt långa
armar. (Cacheägaren brukade använda ett paraply.)
Expressen skrev en
rafflande artikel om händelsen. Påpekas kan att det inte var en
kylväska utan en necessär och den hängde inte i ett rep utan i en
vajer. Här syns cachen, sådan den såg ut efter att den återfåtts
från Norrmalmspolisen. Som synes är vajern kapad - ett typiskt
exempel på polisbrutalitet.

A week ago, workers performing an inspection of the bridge,
discovered a UHO (Unidentified Hanging Object) beneath the bridge.
They called the Police dept, who sent out a) one Police helicopter,
b) one Police boat and c) the Special Force of the Police dept. of
Stockholm.
The Police helicopter hovered close under the bridge, trying to
find out how the UHO was attached, and what it was. After deciding
that it probably was Mostly Harmless, one brave police officer from
the Special Force, equipped with climbing gear, descended and was
able to swing in under the bridge to grab the UHO. While the Police
boat was ready below, in case the UHO should turn into a UFO
(Unidentified Falling Object) the officer cut the wire it was
hanging in and the UHO was taken back to the police station for
technical examination. It was later classified as a geocache,
rather than a UHO. The Special Force signed the Log Book, according
to the procedures described on the Stash Note.
The District Attorney came to the conclusion that no crime was
committed, and that the former UHO therefore should be returned to
its owner. However, due to all the fuss, the cache will not be
restored, and pictures of its location are therefore published
here, for all those who have found it, didn't find it or who
thought of finding it, but never committed.
The pictures above shows the cache, hanging under the bridge
from different angles, picture taken by the Police Dept. prior to
the muggling. The next picture shows the final entry in the log
book, signed by the Special Force ("Piketen"). The third picture
shows the cache, after it was returned to the owner. As you can
see, the wire was cut off instead of just opening the zipper, a
typical example of police brutality.
For the record, you didn't need neither a helicopter, a boat nor
climbing gear to get the cache. You only needed a stick from the
nearest park, in case your arm wasn't long enough to reach the wire
when standing on your knees on the bridge's sidewalk. (The cache
owner often used an umbrella when performing maintenance.)
