Well, the gores and
grants have been covered so now its time to cover some towns! We
really enjoy the this area and decided perhaps we can find a spot
in the beautiful town of Craftsbury!
Town
History:
The town was originally chartered to Timothy Newell, Colonel
Ebenezer Crafts and 61 associates back in 1781, and named Minden.
At the time Colonel Crafts and his family lived in Sturbridge,
Massachusetts.
In 1788 Ebenezer went north to Cabot and then built an 18 mile road
to Minden! He spent the next couple of years building a house,
sawmill and the beginnings of a gristmill. His family moved north
in 1791 and were somewhat slowed in Cabot by four foot deep snow!!
The snow was so deep the horses needed to stay behind and the men
then pulled the women on hand sleds the 18 miles to their new home!
Now that's dedication!
In 1790 the town's name was changed from Minden to Craftsbury,
because Lyndon and Minden sounded so similar and are often
'confused'. You can visit Virtual Vermont to learn more interesting

The
Cache:
This is a two stage multi. First stage starts at a nice spot at
Little Hosmer Pond. This is the first time we have ever seen the
pond while it is not frozen over! We normally come during the
winter to ski at Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Anyway...from there you
will enter your vehicle and head off for a nice walk in the woods
at Craftsbury Academy Woodlot. The cache is a small square
lock-n-lock along a loop trail that is partly on an old logging
road and partly on some very nicely maintained trails. They get a
lot of snow in these parts but the cache should be findable in 3'
of snow and you may still be able to see where to dig with 4' feet
of snow.
Have a great time exploring Vermont!
