How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

The purpose of this cache is to provide training about trackable items, AND provide a challenge to all cachers. Cache is at the posted coordinates.

CHALLENGE:
To log this cache as a find, you must have logged (retrieved or discovered) more geocaching trackables than your current number of total cache finds (at the time of finding this cache). We have achieved this challenge, as we publish this cache with over 2300 trackables logged (not counting our personal collection, of course) and have  over 1840 cache finds logged.

For your current status of logged trackables, go into your caching profile and click on “Quick View”; “Trackables”; “Have Found” (just over the calendar on that page). Your “Total Records” number is just under the Search Results heading. If that number exceeds your total number of official geocache finds, then you have met this challenge. You must sign the log in the cache container. Please do not log this cache if you haven’t qualified for the challenge.

To many geocachers this will be a difficult challenge. Help is provided here if you need it.

FINDING TRACKABLE ITEMS
  • All trackables (TBs) have a unique number on them that must be submitted to successfully log them on the website www.geocaching.com.
  • There are many different types of trackable items that Groundspeak accepts as a find. The most common ones are travel bugs and geocoins, but there are also vehicle tags, garment tags, pet tags, tech tags, etc.
  • Trackable items can be logged as Retrieved, Discovered, Grabbed or Dropped. Your trackable total is advanced by one each time you either Retrieve or Discover one.
  • Once you take possession of a TB, it goes into your current trackable “Inventory”. Every time you log a cache entry, your current trackables inventory appears below the text entry area for that log. Select the appropriate choice.
  • If you take any TBs with you on geocaching trips, you are encouraged to include in your log entry that the TB has “Visited” any caches that you find, while it is in your possession.

TIPS TO INCREASE YOUR TRACKABLE FINDS:
  1. ATTEND GEOCACHING EVENTS
  • Write down the tracking number for each TB that you see on the trackables table. Don’t forget to log them.
  • Check to see if any attendees have left a list of their personal collection of trackable numbers. Copy the list and log them as “Discovered”.
  • Look to see if other attendees are wearing trackable items (e.g. shirts, hats, bracelets, etc. or have trackables on their pet, walking stick or other personal items). Write down the numbers and log them as “Discovered”.
  • Check the parking area for the event and write down tracking numbers on vehicles. Don’t forget to log them as “Discovered”.
  • Many cachers take pictures of the tracking numbers, instead of writing them down. Don’t forget to log them appropriately.

  1. COLLECTIONS
Most veteran geocachers have a collection of trackable items. These are items that they DO NOT circulate. Such items usually represent achievements, favorite places, events, etc. Write down the numbers and log them as “Discovered”.

  2. TRAVEL BUG HOTEL CACHES
Many cache owners create caches specifically designed to contain travel bugs for dropping and exchanging. Visit this type of cache to get tracking numbers from those items. If you “Retrieve” one or more TB, try to “Drop” the same number of items that you take. It is O.K. to visit the same cache multiple times for this purpose. Only log the cache as a “find” the first time.

  3. ALL CACHE LISTINGS have an area on the right side, below the Attributes section, called “Inventory”. If the cache contains tracking items, they will be identified there.
LOGGING TRACKABLES
Don’t forget to log each trackable that you encounter.
  • Log it as “Retrieved” if you take possession of it from a cache or event.
  • Log it as “Discovered” if you see it, but leave it where it was spotted.
  • Log it as “Grabbed” to identify that you have acquired it, but the previous cacher had not yet logged it as a dropped item.
  • Log it as “Dropped” if you leave the TB at an event or in a cache.

PLEASE REMEMBER
  • Move the TBs that you have “Retrieved” to another cache as soon as possible.
  • Try not to “Drop” TBs in caches that are not found frequently.
  • Please remember that trackable owners enjoy reading log entries related to the travels of their TBs. They also enjoy pictures showing places the TBs have visited.
  • DON’T FORGET TO PROPERLY LOG THOSE TRACKABLES!!!
  • THE CACHE DIFFICULTY IS FOR THE CHALLENGE AND NOT THE HIDE.
