This is the third (and final?) virtual cache in my jet lag series in Japan. This park (Meiji-jingu) is a Japanese shrine. It is also a nice big, wonderful park that is a good place to escape the hustle-bustle of Tokyo. Come here early in the morning (its basically open daylight hours) when you are jetlagged and you will have the place to yourself. Even if you're not jetlagged, it's worth a visit on any trip to Tokyo.
The coordinates locate a large structure (very japanese) within the park/shrine. To log the cache, tell me when the structure was built, and what island the material used to build the structure came from.
Nearby there are some interesting things - 200 feet away are about 180 sake drums placed as an offering. North of the structure is the main shrine which is worth a look. If you want, post a picture of something interesting you find in the park (not the structure, please!)
The fastest way if you are rushing is a 0.25 mile walk from Harajuku station. But, my favorite way is if you come from the Shinjuku area (perhaps after logging the Concrete Canyon cache by stesstardi or staying at a hotel there). You have an easy 1.2 mile walk from Shinjuku via the quiet and green 'back door' into the park, which is located at N35 40.687 E139 41.708. On the access road to this entrance, you'll pass the Tokyo Riding Club, where you can often see riders incongruously working their horses in the shadows of the 'Concrete Canyons'! (hence my name for this cache).
Note: This park is a shrine, and as a foreign visitor I did not feel it was appropriate for me to place a real cache, especially given the number of 'Off Limits' signs found along most of the paths. If a Japanese person would like to place a real cache at an appropriate place in the park, I will gladly remove this cache from the site to make way for it. In the meantime, enjoy the hike and hunt!
June 2004 - Glad to see so many people have enjoyed Meiji Jingu. But my other cache "Jet Lag 2, not the Eiffel Tower" in Sapporo has not been found yet. In fact NO ONE has ever found a geocache in Hokkaido! Who will be the FTF? Gambete kudasai Japanese geocachers!!
