Geocache Description:

The Alpena was built in River Rouge, Michigan and originally launched in November 1942 with the name Leon Fraser, a part of the Pittsburgh Steamship Company fleet.
It became a part of the Inland Lakes Transportation fleet in 1990. The boat is a bulk freighter, and in its day was the first of the “super” AA class boat. In 1989 the boat was shortened by 120 feet and became a self-loading cement carrier.
The Boat was originally 519 feet in length and has a maximum load capacity of 13,900 tons. It is powered by a 4,000 horsepower steam engine.
