This is a fun multi-step cache which will lead you on a walkable trek through the streets of downtown Asheville. To find the coordinates of the final cache's resting place, print these pages and take them with you to the above target coordinates. Once there, you will answer the questions below to fill in the missing numbers for the final coordinates! Some of the questions require mental focus and close observation! Have fun!

Be sure to enjoy the abundance of shops, restaurants, cafes, bookstores, art galleries, and more on this tour!

Your final destination will be:

N 35° __ __ . __ __ __
W 82° __ __ . __ 7 __

1) At the above target coordinates, you should be at a corner in front of one of our favorite reading spots in Asheville! How many lovely yet silent ladies do you see shopping in front of the store? Put this number in the first blank in Longitude West above.

2) Next, walk to these coordinates:

N 35° 35.712
W 82° 33.286

In this vicinity, you should find a large domestic appliance and a plaque with information about one of Asheville's famous buildings standing before you. In what year was this building erected? Take the last 2 digits of the year and add 12. This answer will fill the first 2 blanks of Latitude North.

3) Walk down the "cobblestone" street to your left, past the unique shops until you come to a locally famous vegetarian restaurant. Mmmm, delicious food, even if you don't consider yourself a vegetarian! How many tropical birds do you find on the nearby wall? Hint: The answer is near the name of the establishment. Multiply this number by two and put that number in the 4th blank space in Latitude North.

4) Right next door, you will find a "gleeful" community church. Walking past the entrance, how many felines do you see on and around the "Cat Walk"? LOOK CLOSELY!! This is the spot most likely to cause an incorrect coordinate. An error here will put you WAY, WAY off! Put this number in the 2nd blank space in Longitude West.

5) Standing in the same spot as the felines, look around for a wall and see how many human whitewater paddlers you can find in the closest watercraft. Put this number in the 5th blank space of Latitude North.

6)Retrace your steps to the domestic appliance and walk to these coordinates:

N 35° 35.695
W 82° 33.222

Roughly, in this vicinity you should spot a unique foliage-laden sculptural bench. Sit and rest in this "lush and leafy" yet urban spot. How many eyes are looking down on you in contemplation? Add 7 to this number and place your answer in the 4th blank space of Longitude West.

7) Following the flow of traffic east, walk up to the large monument in the center of the city that you can see ahead of you. How many different species' footprints have tread nearby? Place this number in the 3rd blank space in Longitude West.

8) From the monument, head north down a major New York City theater street, past a "green" restaurant on the corner and many businesses, until you come to a junction where you will see a "peaceful, fungal" pizza joint. Continue along the same street until you come to a piece of sculpture by Dennis Smith. (The name of the piece is Sculpture. How original...) How many boys are on stilts in this piece of sculpture? Subtract one from this number and place your answer in the 3rd blank space of Latitude North.

That's it! You now have the coordinates for the resting place of this cache. You will need to drive to the location as it is several miles away on the outskirts of the city. The hiding place for the cache is in a lovely natural place that is easy to find but not known to many. Please try to be as discreet as possible when retrieving the cache! You are looking for a medium-sized Lock&Lock container. Come with a camera and bird guidebook for maximum fun! Enjoy!

CHECKSUM: The nine blanks all add up to 34. (Don't include the 7!)

You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.

11/7/08 UPDATE: The cache has gone missing a number of times so I have moved it. You still need to calculate the coordinates using everything above, but once you have them subtract 0.050 from the latitude and subtract 0.070 from the longitude for the new location of the cache. The CHECKSUM and Geochecker.com are still for the original coordinates. I still recommend that you visit the originally calculated coordinates as the view is worth it! The new cache location is only a short walk from there.

A non-cacher found the cache on 11/8/09 and took everything. I am in contact with this person and am trying to get the cache and contents -- including at least one TB -- back in place.

Found this one with visiting friends before I had a profile of my own. Signed using a different name that I thought wouldn't be taken, but it ended up being taken once I was creating my profile. This was very fun - just getting into caching...

I'm so happy that my "Overdue" TB landed in Altamont -- er, I mean, Asheville -- a city I really like. I went to summer camp not far from here in the 1960s. I love the art deco buildings on the main square, which look like a movie set from a futuristic old movie. I attended a few sessions of Bascom Lamar Lunsford's folk-music festival here "back in the day." Enjoy Asheville, travel bug! (And remember, TBs, unlike people, CAN go home again.)

This was a fun cache. My wife really loved it and it was a great way to see downtown Asheville. This was four of six today. Dropped off a travel bug I found in Atlanta. I hope it keeps on moving. Grabbed a bug out of it and I will bring it back home with me.
