In the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's, if you had a hot rod and wanted to try to get airborne, Airplane Hill was the place to try it. Bellflower Blvd ended at PCH. Southbound traffic merged onto 2-lane Manila Avenue. Over 4th Street and Airplane Hill, paved Manila ended at Colorado and dirt Manila ran into the oil fields.
Today Bellflower bypasses Airplane Hill. Manila has cul-de-sacs at PCH and at Colorado, and the vacant lots on Manila are full of houses. But Airplane Hill abides, host to track teams, brave skateboarders and cross-country ski trainers (including Solpugids).
This cache epitomizes the cache & dash.
5/13/07 Note regarding bouncing coordinates. My GPS bounces all over and has trouble settling down at GZ - Maybe trees, power poles? Anyway, two cachers (Amtracker & Treasure Cachers) prefer the following coordinates:
