Geocache Description:

‘Philanthropic Find’ our 1st cache placed, is a multi-cache set in and around Cheshams beautiful park. It is likely to take around 1 hour 30mins and include a few of the historic sights along with a couple of good views. Please take a printout of this page and a pen with you as you will need to work out the final co-ords with a little maths.

Lowndes Park, just one of the sights you will see on your hunt for this cache

I would suggest parking your car in Pednor Road at N51°42.213 W000°37.175, there are a number of spots along this stretch of road that are suitable.

Your first target is the clock tower which can be found at N51°42.237 W000°36.802.

To get there you will be walking through the oldest part of Chesham, Church Street.
On the left is the entrance to Chesham Bury if you’re lucky and it’s a Bank holiday they quite often host a fete which not only gives the kids something to do but provides a great chance to view the house and grounds. Originally held by the Sifrewast family in Norman times and by their heirs until it somehow escheated to the Crown in 1486. In 1704 the Secretary of the Treasury, William Lowndes, established his local status by acquiring it. It took the Lowndes family another century to acquire the adjoining Park from the Skottowes family which you will see later on your travels. Just a little further down on the right is number 54 Church Street, the oldest house in Chesham – it is marked by a small plaque.

Please be sure to use the crossing on your final approach to the clock tower as the main road through the town is very busy. In what year was the clock restarted? 199A

Next head through the main high street up to the war memorial which can be found at N51°42.370 W000°36.747 How many Gomm’s listed for the 1914-18 war gives B.

Now off towards Lowndes park, again please use the crossings over the main road. The park became the Towns in 1953 in a philanthropic gesture from the Lowndes family. it occupies 28 acres including Skottowes Pond. The avenue through the centre is called Rue de Houilles and was originally lined by 80 limes. You are looking for a national cycle post at N51°42.334 W000°36.921 How many miles does it say to Gerrards Cross. Giving C Miles.

Continue along the Rue de Houilles and go through the large gate at the end. Within the cemetery of St Mary’s church you will see a cross dedicated to Chesham Martyr Thomas Harding. It can be found at N51°42.251 W000°36.995 In what year did he lay down his life? 1D32

The final co-ordinates can be worked out as follows:

N51°(D-1)A.(Bx2)(C+6) W000°B(D+A).(Bx3)(C+A+A)

To get you on your way, re-enter the park through the big gate and turn immediately left, then follow the path up past the bowls club. Once back into open park I suggest taking the higher ground. Here you will find a peculiar mound which used to be home to a windmill that was relocated in 1821 to Lacey Green. Follow the link for more info (visit link) From here you will see some great views looking back across Chesham and across the woods towards Pednor.

Now just follow the GPS along the path out of the park to the cache.

To return to the car plug in the original parking co-ordinates to find a shortcut back!
