Visitar Tavira

Edifício do séc.

XVIII). - Capela do Santíssimo, paredes revestidas a azulejos historiados (séc. XVIII). XVIII). - Capela do Senhor dos Passos, paredes revestidas a azulejos (séc. XVII) e retábulo de talha (séc. XVIII).

XVII e XVIII.

My english speaking friends will excuse me for not translating all of the above text, as some expressions are very technical for my english level.  Please check with Tavira tourist office for more details. Tavira has many things to see and visit. I only mention these next three because they're near the cache.

To visit Tavira

The castle and the many bell towers of the various churches. The river where houses and gardens are reflected. The triangles of the treasure roofs. Horizons of beach and sea. Enchantments of Tavira, city of art and history, a must-visit in the cultural script of the Algarve.

The Castle

It was a part, with the walls that encircled the city, of the defensive system of the Tavira, of which still remain part of the walls among the houses and the door of the Mercy. The primitive moorish blockhouse was reconstructed by king D. Dinis (1261-1325).
From the towers one has a panoramic view on Tavira and its surroundings, enclosing the sea.
There are many legends related to this castle.

Visit the nearby Church of Santa Maria do Castelo

Probably build in the place of the old mosque. Building of 13th century with posterior alterations, in part provoked by 1755 earthquake. Its style is mostly gothic.
On the exterior, other gothyc elements exist: window in ogive and small rosette, dogs and 'gárgulas'.

The Clock tower belongs, also, to the primitive construction, with posterior decorative add-ons. In the left wall of the main chapel, the tomb of the seven Knights of the Order of Sant'Iago killed by the moors in an ambush, reason of the conquest of the city. In the tribune, an image of great beauty of Our Lady (18th cent.).

Other atractions at this church: - Santíssimo chapel, with walls covered with historic tiles (13th century). - Chapels of the Souls, in the central element, presents religious iconography in high-relief (beginning of 18th cent.). - Capela do Senhor dos Passos, tiles (séc. XVII) and retábulo of cut (18th cent.). - sacristia, tiles of 18th cent., decorated with hampers of fruit and jars of flowers. A special reference to a precious bookshelf of missal proceeding from Japan (art "nambam"), of 16/17th cent.. In the main chapel, a tablet indicates the place of the sepulture of D. Paio Peres Correia, brave master of the Order of Sant'Iago that had decisive influence in reconquers Christian of the Algarve and part of the south of Spain.

Visit the nearby Church of Sant'Iago

Built, according to tradition, in the place of the lesser mosque. With origin in 17th cent., it suffered successive modifications. Of poor architectural style, it keeps, however, a valuable set of images and paintings, some proceeding ones from extinct convents: Nossa Senhora da Conceição (18th cent.), in the main chapel, of Nossa Senhora a Franca (possibly of the 16th cent.) and of the Sacred Family (18th cent.), in lateral chapels. In the sacristia, an interesting image of Our Lady (15th cent.) and others of 17th and 18th centuries.

Easily found thanks to the hint. Mrs. Mc Rover greatly appreciated a small botanical garden in what would be the parade ground of the castle. TFTC.

Greetings from Spain

Back in Tavira we climbed the stairs up to the castle. We looked around and found the cache. A lovely view from here over the city.
