Geocache Description:

Dupree's Diamond Blues

Another Apple Valley urban multi!

Martin was into collecting precious metals and stones, illegally. Back in the early eighties he had owned a few stores in an around a small, virtually unknown town, known as Apple Valley. Martin used these stores as a front for his illegal activities and was frequently fencing the stones for cash during the evening and sometimes even during the day.

In 1985, the Secret Service was tipped off to Martin's schemes by a small-time counterfeiter from Eagan who had been using a high-speed scanner and laser printer to copy $1 and $5 bills. Dupree, as he was known, was using change machines all over the South Metro to launder the fake bills into hard currency. When he was finally arrested he had less than $100 on him... All in quarters.

Wanting to stay out of the state pen he struck a deal. He'd roll over on someone who was dealing in major materials if they kept him out of prison. What the Secret Service didn't know is that Dupree had sent Martin a heads-up to let him know someone might be after him.

Martin, seeing the writing on the wall, hid several of his most precious stones in, and around, Apple Valley. He figured that if he actually did get convicted he would have some insurance for his life after prison stashed away.

Martin never made it out of prison... Dupree knew of Martin's plan and the rat let the word spread quickly. When Martin wouldn't spill the beans to his cellmate he ended up with a shank to the stomach. Dupree ended up spending eighteen months in a halfway house just outside of Brainerd deep in thought about how he was going to retrieve Martin's trove without being discovered. He has been seen wandering aimlessly in the streets of Apple Valley ever since...

I was doing some unrelated research on 16th Century Russian Czarinas and stumbled across information which uncovered some of Martin's legal business deals. This welcome diversion from my research led me to come up with some likely locations for his stashes. Unfortunately they have been recently developed due to Apple Valley's massive growth. Right now, two of the locations are VERY busy and constantly crawling with people, a third is surrounded by buildings full of watchful eyes. You shouldn't have too much of a problem at the first, depending on the time of day. The second can also be busy depending on the time of day and is quite exposed, but you shouldn't have too much to worry about there. The third location, on the other hand, is by far the most difficult as it is under constant surveillance and is located behind a popular restaurant and in a fairly busy city park. I do ask that you do not retrieve the stashes in any location while in plain view of anyone -- you never know if Dupree is lurking, just waiting for his chance to let someone else do his dirty work for him!

While walking the area and giving it a quick once over, I observed a man dropping what appeared to be Monopoly money into a wishing well. I asked him what he was doing and he ran away towards a family of three. To this day I wonder if that wasn't Dupree himself... I may never know.

If you happen to find Martin's various stash locations please do rehide the containers just as well as you found them and make sure that you are either take liberty with the truth or out and out lie. We don't want Dupree finding the stones and ruining the hunt for everyone else now do we?

There is legal parking available near all the possible stash locations but it is very possible to ride a bike or even walk between them (I did). From the research I did, it is my belief that Martin hid most of his stashes in plain view as he knew he might be returning to the locations years later, but as always, don't quote me on that. Due to this it is not necessary to dig, rip, tear apart, stomp, trample, poke with sticks, eat, or burn any of the surrounding areas to retrieve the stashes. The final container should slide open. There is no reason to modify the container in any way to get at the logbook or items inside.

While the cache areas are wheelchair accessable, I don't believe that you will be able to retrieve the stages w/o additional assistance.

Due to the first stage going missing and my being worried it would just happen again, I have turned the first stage into a virtual stage. Near the posted coordinates you will find a small plaque. Written on the plaque there are multiple sets of numbers. Take the five digit number on the bottom of the plaque and subtract 50231 and put the resulting number into N44 XX.XXX. Take the same number and subtract 81749 and put the result into W093 YY.YYY. That will take you to the second stage.

Apparently the final stage coordinates are about 20 feet too far North you can now refrain from mentioning it in your logs.
