The system of Locks in the Murray River play a vital role in
ensuring a water supply remains in the lower reaches year round.
Prior to the installation of Locks most summers would see the
Murray River being no more than pools of water or perhaps a trickle
of water like a small stream.
The first navigation Lock to be built on the Murray resides at
Blanchtown (Lock 1) and was constructed in 1922.
This Lock, Lock 3 (Overland Corner), was constructed in 1925 and
sits 10 metres above sea level and 431km from the Murray Mouth. The
start of the Murray at Hume Dam is 192 metres above sea level and
some 2225km from the Murray Mouth.
Lock 3 provides grassed viewing areas suitable for picnics,
toilets, an information bay and ample parking for visitors. This
Lock (unlike others) is open to the public 24 hours a day however
daylight hours would be the best time to get the most out of your
visit.
The road to the Lock is mainly gravel from the main highway and
should be fine year round for all vehicles. Given the closeness of
houses and the Lockmasters office this cache is a micro, an Eclipse
container. So this one may be tricky without the hint.
