This memorial is
dedicated to the soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor.
They served in Viet Nam from 1966 to 1970. Many gave their
lives in combat at a time when this sacrifice was not well
appreciated.
A boulder is inscribed
with the names of the men who served, including those who didn't
come home. I don't know how this memorial came to be here, but I
don't think many people know about it.
A fitting place for a moment of silence for some men who did their
duty over thirty years ago.
The stones and flagpole are actually
visible from the I-5 freeway, but getting to the site is not really
easy.Finding a way across the tracks and into this commercial area
takes a bit. There are four sets of coordinates below that will
help. This is not a multi-cache, these are just intersections that
are easy to miss.
A) N33° 28.878' W117° 40.258'
B) N33° 28.911' W117° 40.430'
C) N33° 29.071' W117° 40.320'
D) N33° 29.132' W117° 40.170
I found this memorial
accidentally while looking for DrBob's nearby cache, GCGWJZ. You
can't get there from here, because of the San Juan Creek channel.
If you want to try for that cache, head up to Del Obispo and drive
West of the railroad tracks a bit.
