Geocache Description:

Providence's memorials to WWI, WWI, and the Korean War sit along the riverfront.

This cache draws you to a section of the riverfront where three war memorials -- to World War I, World War II, and the Korean War -- are located, along with a memorial to victims of violent crime, and two pieces of public art.

The World War I memorial towers over the area and casts its shadow onto the city courthouse behind. The names of battles are carved into its face, and bronze panels are set in the top of the first step which depict ships, planes, etc. On top of the plinth, a figure lifts her gaze to the sea. The memorial is ringed with shady trees and benches on which to rest and think. Read about it on the web: www.brown.edu/Courses/HA0191/new/mm/worldwarI.html

To the west, the Korean War memorial includes a lone figure on patrol. Its web page: www.rikoreanwarmemorial.com

To the east, the World War II memorial occupies the other end of the park. Its circular crown rises above a map of the world and its supporting pillars bear the names of major theaters and battles. The crest of each Rhode Island town is carved into the wall, along with the number of citizens lost. Four benches bear the names of Roosevelt's "four freedoms." Its web site: www.riwwii-memorial.org

On the north side of the park, a pillar rises made of cement and pieces of guns: a message discouraging violence.

In memory of my grandfather's World War II service in the US AAF 7th Radio Squadron Mobile (J), and of all those who suffered and served in all wars. I encourage you to visit this park, to rest a moment, and to wish them thanks and peace for their sacrifice and that of their families.

Note: there is lots of foot traffic in this area all the time. (Probably out of the question to search for it during Water Fire.) In fact, the cache has been muggled twice, so you may want to think twice about dropping travel bugs or geocoins here. (Which makes me sad.)

Bring your own pen. This cache is not really wheelchair-friendly.

Note: Placed in a new location about a dozen feet away, as of 12-MAY-2011. Feel free to log a new "Found" if you like.
