Geocache Description:

It’s springtime for CITO in New Orleans! (That’s à la “The Producers”, if you were wondering.)

We all know the toll Katrina took on the city of New Orleans (and us!) and how much the city is still struggling almost 7 months later. All it takes is a drive through the city streets to realize how much work still needs to be done. Most of it is too much for the average citizen to handle, but there IS something we can do.

Let’s join together for the ultimate CITO event – cleaning up hurricane debris in New Orleans. We’ll be working in conjunction with the Katrina Krewe and hundreds of volunteers to help pitch in for a cleaner city, and if we gain some positive recognition of geocaching in the process, all the better.

COORDINATES HAVE BEEN UPDATED!

As this is April in New Orleans, we can assume it will be hot and humid. The work may be strenuous. Dress appropriately for the weather and the job; sunblock is also recommended. Bring gloves and a rake (or 2) if you have them. CONTRACTOR garbage bags will be provided, but if you bring some they’ll be appreciated. I'll have an ice chest full of water bottles, but you're welcome to bring some, too.

Due to the nature of some of the trash in the area, it is recommended that small children NOT participate in this event. Teens, however, are welcome to join us, and we’ll have service hour forms available for anyone who needs them. We will be asked to sign a waiver form releasing the Katrina Krewe from any liability should someone get injured. You can print out the waiver form and bring it with you to the event. (Waiver form - http://cleanno.org/PDF/KatrinaKreweRelease.pdf )

As Big Doggy has previously stated in his CITO events, “. . . this is your chance to add one of those rare, pretty blue and green CITO icons to your list of accomplishments and enhance your status as a geocaching veteran.”

WHEN: Saturday, April 15, 2006 9:00 – 12:00

WHERE: Calliope St. near Baronne St. in New Orleans, UPTOWN SIDE OF THE INTERSECTION

BRING: Work gloves, a rake, completed waiver form.

LOOK FOR: My dirty beige Durango with CITO signs on the windows and a Signal the Frog antenna ball, and the Katrina Krewe van. (My cell phone number will be on the CITO signs on my Durango.)

AFTERWARDS:

Gather at City Park N 29° 59.031 W 090° 05.768 (City Park Avenue side, portalets nearby) for a bring-your-own-everything picnic, just to socialize, or to snag some of the caches in the park. We'll also have some small "rewards" for those who participate in the clean-up efforts, and drawings for 2 unactivated CITO coins.
