The Hampton family was one of the pioneering families up the Squilchuck canyon. Mission Ridge was basically their "back yard", and Tony Hampton's three sons, Walter, Wilmer and Albert spent their years hiking and skiing Mission Ridge and Squilchuck State Park (before it was a state park.) They traveled around the country and Canada competing in world champion ski events, bringing home honors.
When Wilmer decided to turn Mission Ridge into a destination Ski Area, at first the people in town laughed at him.
They called the idea the "Hampton Folly". The family persevered, though, and now the Mission Ridge Ski area is considered one of the best ski areas in the Cascades for dry powder snow.
