On Tuesday, March 22, Sarnia Road closed to traffic between Wonderland Road and Hyde Park Road for the construction of a new, substantial bridge structure.
The original pin-connected Pratt through truss bridge was built ca. 1890 in St. James, Manitoba and was relocated to this location in 1909.
The old one lane bridge was disassembled in March and is being kept in city storage until they find a new use for the 109-year-old bridge.
It cost 11.5 millions dollars and took seven months to build, but the new Sarnia Road Bridge is now open to traffic.
The brand new two lane bridge offers sidewalks and bike lanes to replace the old one lane truss bridge that was re-located to London in 1909.
