One of our local geocaching legends, gentle giant and master raconteur Yrium, passed away in early July 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Known throughout the region for his wit and hilarious cache logs, Yrium was a “Pal” to everyone he met through caching in person or online. On behalf of the San Diego Geocaching community, we dedicate this cache in celebration of his life.
Warning: The POSTED COORDINATES are NOT for the cache. To find the cache, you must first download and complete the Yrium Letterbox Puzzle that is posted below. All of the information is available online. Use the decoder to determine the cache coordinates.
UPDATE July 2008: The original ammo box, logbook, and letterbox stamp/ink pad were muggled, apparently around the time of President Bush II's visit following the Cedar Fire. New container is a flat 1.7L clear Lock & Lock covered by a camouflage shroud. Logbook is also new as is the swag. Calculated coordinates remain as before. The new container also contains two vintage photos of Yrium in caching mode, including one with his trusty companion Gromit. Please leave these photos in the cache when making your exchanges. Location remains the same.

This area is environmentally sensitive. You will encounter numerous signs asking you to stay on the maintained trails to allow for vegetation recovery. The cache is placed within 20 feet of the western edge of a wide dirt pedestrian road. Please follow an existing footpath from the road edge to the cache hiding spot, starting at the most obvious open area a few yards to the south of the cache latitude. You will not need to bushwhack if you are in the correct location. Although there are no signs in the immediate vicinity of the cache, we ask that you stay on established paths throughout your visit and do your part to help maintain a positive reputation for geocachers.
Please be discrete in approaching and rehiding the cache as there is occasional pedestrian traffic nearby.
