Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Don’t attempt this type of cache unless you are experienced with abseiling gear , and able to deal with heights.

As with this type of cache all care has been taken , but the responsibility is totally up to you .

The only Equipment needed is a harness and a carabiners ( no ropes needed ) to clip into the pulley on the tyronlean traverse .

This destination will take you to one of the best sport climbing areas in the blue mountains .

The reason for the name , comes from the movie . you know the part where the rescue team are using a tyronlean traverse stretched over a huge canyon .

This is what awaits you. ( minus a helicopter )

This is the only parking area , usual you will see a quite a few cars here , they will be climbers ( winter only ) From the car parking spot walk west 100m up the road to a fire trail. This is the start of your adventure.

From here follow the newly graded trail for 25 min till you will see the cairn ( small pile of rocks ) on the left hand side.

This is a single trail track heading west ( well walked ) follow this for 5 minutes or so till you get to a small cliff . a quick rock scramble with a rope in place to assist .

Continue for a short while the track drops down on the left and follows a over hung cave , at the end of this ,there will be a rope to assist a 2 meter rock scramble down to a track which will follow the base of the cliffs.

The tyronlean traverse is a couple minutes from here , the cache is on the other side up the hill.

All in all should take 45min to 1 hour each way if on foot. Or if on mountain bike around 30min each way . only ride the mtb on the fire trail .

Wow, what a cool idea for a cache location! This cache was a true adventure and great fun.

We inadvertently added some additional adventure by attempting this after a full day of climbing, which rewarded us with a race against the fading light and an eventual walk out in the dark!

We enjoyed the walk/scramble down and were very glad to find a couple of knotted ropes along the way.

The Tyrolean traverse was awesome fun. All four of us went across and there was plenty of yelling and cheering each other on!

The search at GZ was a bit challenging but Anna finally had the right idea and soon after that we had the cache in hand.

L: Red smiley face (like us: red and sweaty but really happy)
T: NZ Mushroom travel bug

I went to this cache with my son and Ropes - we've had it on the to do list for quite a while now. The cache was great fun, I haven't done a Tyrolean traverse before. It was interesting to see the canyon from a different perspective. We had to scramble around and around and finally up and up until we finally found the cache. Just below, we saw a Rose Robin, very pretty. The area is rugged and lovely - although it seems more rugged on the way back. It was a hot day and we used up lots of water going up the hills. The round trip took us about four hours from the carpark waypoint. Thanks Foundem for an excellent adventure cache. We put in a torch keyring, and also a coin to encourage other adventurous cachers out.

Couple of us are planning to do this one Wednesday 17th December, meeting at the carpark at 10am. Welcome to join us.

And we did!...Great exercise for the day. It appears the rope arrangement has been re-configured from the original photos and allows an easier crossing than I have seen in previous logs/links. Connected a prussik loop to the pulley crab (allows more flexibility and easier landings) and pushed off. Crossed the canyon and proceeded on and up to GZ. Thanks to *socks* and Julian for the company. Dropped a bug.
