Placed in Hail Mary Wood, Rotherham near the former Orgreave Colliery. This cache in under trees so GPS reception may be poorer in summer. The Cache is accessible with wheelchairs and pushchairs if you park near the Treeton Enterprise Centre and approach the cache from Treeton Dyke.
As Sheffield is the most wooded city in the UK, it makes sense to have a series in some of the lesser known woodlands, both old and new.
This is the second in the planned series with more to follow. There is no link between them currently. Hail Mary wood although not in Sheffield is now becoming another of Poppy’s favourite walks. The area is crisscrossed with paths all ideal for dogs. The cache can easily be done in 30 minutes however. While here, you can also pop into nearby Treeton wood and pick up the ‘Treeton Wood’ Cache.
Hail Mary wood is classed as Heritage woodlands and is undergoing restoration (thinning, new benches being added etc.) to improve the areas potential for recreational use.
The term ‘Heritage woodland’ is given because the wood is recognised as being over 400 years old. They contain a diverse population of trees, plant and wild life as well as a wide range of habitats. They also have some Archaeological or Historical features.
The History of Hail Mary is not well known, but near by Hail Mary Hill is an archaeological site dating back to the middle stone age. Materials such as chert and flint where fashioned into tools. Arrow heads and tools have been found throughout the woodland.
further details on the woodland can be found at www.heritagewoodsonline.co.uk
Near by is the former Ogreave Colliery. Infamous for some of the early and worst riots of the 1980’s miners strike. Since the Colliery closed in 1990, the site has been used for open cast mining. Now the area is being restored, with plans to create a new community ‘Waverley’ and surrounding manufacturing and advanced technology parks.
The cache itself is a 1.5L box with the usual goodies.
Whilst here, why not do Yorkiepudding's 'Treeton Woods' and 'Hail Mary Woods'
