Geocache Description:

The difficulty rating is partly based on having to clean your shorts, otherwise it is a three star. It is spooky.

The year was 1969, and it was the summer of love. In the midst of flower power, Oklahoma’s economy was riding the wave of black gold. The wealthiest socialites in Oklahoma City were part of the neuvo-rich who sprang up from the vast oil reserves of the Oklahoma prairies. Even among the cash laden peaceniks, Morticia Graves stood out for both her vast inherited wealth and the lavish, often reckless manner with which she enjoyed it. In August of 69, Ms. Graves made headlines in the regional rags for her purchase of the Suns of Aquarius, a world famous necklace of diamonds and rubies featuring the Aquarius diamond which weighed in at just under twenty carats. The purchase price was rumored to have exceeded eight million dollars.

There are many photographs available from the society pages of the weeks following the purchase which feature Morticia wearing the almost priceless piece. The ever present Dittums, Morticia’s canine companion, is visible in most of the society page photos, and was reported to have been with her on the fateful night of October 20, 1969. Even with the furor of Woodstock and calamity in Vietnam, the brutality and mystery surrounding Morticia’s disappearance broke through to be front page news. The body was never found, but certain parts were.

The last known photo of Ms. Graves was taken that evening, on October, 20th, as she was leaving the Governor’s Halloween Ball. Dittums was with her, and the Suns of Aquarius sparkled as she rode off in her limousine, alone except for the chauffer. The next day her limousine was found on the edge of a wooded area that was, in 1969, on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. The amount of blood in the vehicle was described as more than could come from a single person.

The ensuing search in the nearby woods at first turned up nothing, but authorities were looking for something the size of a body. When a single human hand was discovered, the nature of the search changed, and a series of grisly finds soon came to light. The last body part to be discovered was a woman’s foot which was being guarded by the devoted Dittums. No enticement would lure Dittums away from the remains of his mistress. So fierce was his loyalty that the authorities finally had to use a net to subdue him. They retrieved the foot, but Dittums managed to escape into the woods and was never seen again as police tried to piece together the crime.

What was immediately evident was that the Suns of Aquarius was missing, and that the search had failed to turn up Morticia's head. Also, the chauffer was nowhere to be found, and he quickly became the primary suspect.

Those close to Ms. Graves claim that the chauffer was actually her lover and that the two were very much in love. They discount the assertion that he would even have been capable of such an act. Others claim that Morticia had intended to break up with him that night because she had been secretly seeing another, and that the chauffer must have been driven mad with jealousy. If the latter opinion is true, it could explain some of the occurrences in this wooded area since.

Many claim to have seen sparkling gems from the Suns of Aquarius hovering in the woods on dark nights. Some say it is the ghost of Morticia trying to lead someone to her missing head so that she can finally be at peace. Others claim that the blood trail reappears when the spirits are lurking, as if the night is replaying the act of her body being dragged to its dismemberment. And even though the chauffer was never captured, there has been more that one report of a man matching his description who is seen weeping faintly as he walks through the woods, the glint of steel in one hand, and the gleam of blood on the other.

This is a nighttime only cache in a wooded area. You will need a powerful flashlight with which to lure Morticia, but with the right equipment, she will make herself known. The glow of the gems of her necklace will guide the way. The cache container has a storage capacity of roughly 4”x4”x4”. This cache is themed, but following the theme is not mandatory. The original contents include a severed finger, a couple of body part bouncy balls, an issue sticker, some log pages, and a couple other items. (not a lot of room)
