The Fairbanks Convention and Visitors
Bureau'sLog Cabin Visitor Center has on-line and
hardcopy references available for all visitors. Hours of
operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week from May 10-25,
then 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 26 through Sept. 7. Hours scale back to 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. again starting Sept. 8. Brochures are
available from dispensers outside the cabin's doors during
non-business hours.
Outside the Visitor Center
is Golden Heart Plaza. The plaza features a fountain
surrounded by interpretive plaques commemorating the development of
Alaska. During the summer, flowers bloom profusely and people
enjoy sitting on the plaza's benches watching people and/or the
Chena River go by.
Just south at 250 Cushman
Street is the Alaska Public Lands Information
Center, where
you can get information about access to Alaska's state and federal
lands. Free documentary and wildlife movies are shown
throughout the day at the center and the staff there can help you
plan your trip(s) outside the city. Hours of operation
are: Summer, daily, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and
Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the rest of the
year.
Needless to say, this area
is one of the most public of public places in Fairbanks, which
makes this one of the most brazen local caches. The
camouflaged candy tin cache is hidden in a location that will
shield you from most inquisitive eyes, but the tradeoff is sketchy
GPS reception. Please use your best stealth moves and/or come
during quiet times to assure the longevity of this cache. You do
not need to leave the sidewalk or dig around in the flower beds to
access the cache.
Enjoy your stay in
Fairbanks, the Golden Heart of Alaska!!!
