Cache is located in the Nichewaug Tract of the swift river reservation, which is a property of The Trustees of Reservations. The Nichewaug Tract includes extensive rocky ledges, a moist ravine, open fields, a beaver-dammed swamp, vernal pools, riverside habitat, and forest edges along woods roads.
Parking directions: from intersection of Routes 122 and 32 south of Petersham center, take South Street 0.9 mi. Turn right onto Nichewaug Road and proceed 0.6 mi. to entrance and parking (6 cars) on left. Study the map in the parking area before you start. The trails are marked with yellow blazes or trustees badges but they are sometimes hard to follow. There are numbers at the trailheads, which helps.
I would suggest taking the woods road from the parking lot to the river and following the trail up to the cache and then back to the parking area. This will give you a good tour of the stone walls, old foundations and rock ledges of the area. There is a vista at N42 27.143 w72 10.921,which overlooks the valley.

Cache is in a 9+8+6 plastic container with the usual cache trinkets.

i too took the wrong trail and ended up climbing the cliff to get to it like runnawaybunny, more tricky for me with snow and ice but I do love a challenge. I took dolphin path tag and did a good job hiding the cache with sticks it was almost out in the open the way i found it

A beautiful hike on a snowy first day of 2010. Mildly strenuous hike in the winter. Cache is nice and dry. Took geocoin.

Ok this cache is now back in place. Here's what happened. We followed the yellow trail but we went left instead of right after the vista, which took us down to the bottom of the cliff. We decided to stay on the yellow trail thinking it might loop around. We kept on it to the road and took an overgrown trail which only came within 500 feet of the cache. A couple of us decided to go cliff climbing to reach the cache and take it back to the others. We thought we'd find the correct path to the cache to replace it but nope. We ended up taking it home and were going to replace it on Sunday but 40 degree rain and just generally yucky weather kept us away.

This time we took the trail to the right instead of left but that one led us off in the wrong direction as well. Finally just bushwacked straight which did eventually hook up with the footpath that took us right to the cache. We traded travel bugs and filled the cache will lots of swag including Noël's pathtag swag. We took a rubber bracelet. Thanks for the cache and the adventure. :)

We all headed for this one as our last cache of the day. We hiked the trail and than a few of us stayed back with the kids while 2 went up bushwacking to try to find the cache. They came back with the cache, it was getting late at that point and we had to get back to the cars. We swaped 3 for 3.
