How Geocaching Works
Silver Bay Public Marina, North Shore Lake Superior. Silver Bay MN. 55601
This 1 gallon cammo appropriate cache was placed for those who enjoy a little more than a park and grab. The island is about .32 miles off the shoreline and is reachable by rock hopping the boulders placed to protect the harbor. It is not difficult if you take your time and watch your step. Personally, I like to go as fast as I can to test my mental and foot coordination.
Upon reaching the island, you will notice three tree logs wedged vertically against the crevice and a short rope attached from the top. Apparently that is how the locals get to the top of the island as there are many foot trails through the woods up there. I tested the rope, and checked it thoroughly before placement, and it is very solid. I put my wife and kids on it, so I trust it with yours.
The 360 degree view is spectacular, and the island rises over 70 feet above Lake Superior and boasts many sheer drop offs. My favorite spot was an easily acessible, small secluded beach, on the lea side out of the wind.
Bring a small pic-nic and a camera, as I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
