Geocache Description:

Located in East Meadows section of Northampton. Historical cache. Metal box at top of abandoned old bridge foundation. Swamps to either side of ridge.

Park at N42 17.952 x W72 38.771 and hike .47 mi to cache location. Mostly level bushwacking through woods, vines, plants. Trail is forming better with each visitor. Some poison ivy is growing in areas but I have not gotten any in my 3 visits so far. Paperwork in cache is sealed in ziplock bags and describes importance of site. Please sign logbook and replace paper items and box as found for others to enjoy. Definitely wear long old pants.

Insect repellant suggested. Mosquitos very hungry here.

Feel free to log your experience but please don't give the cache subject away in the logs. Cache is on an overlook spot looking over the river.

I drove to parking area from Old Springfield Road off Rt 5, but there are other ways in as well. The Mill river was diverted in the 1930's due to problems with flooding in the center of northampton. The diversion runs from paradise pond at Smith College to the Connecticut river past the cache site. It used to flow through the center of town behind the town hall and parking garage.

Do not try and cross the river. A regular compass for bearing accuracy under the tree cover would be helpful.

Many songbirds and wildlife here and on roads into area. I suprised two snakes sunning themselves and saw a red headed flicker.
