Geocache Description:

The cache is a camouflaged micro at ground level close to the mural.

Fitzrovia mural, Whitfield Gardens, off Tottenham Court Road. This memorial to the characters of Fitzrovia, painted in 1980 by Mick ‘Not the Clash one’ Jones (who did the top half) and Simon Barber (who did the bottom), is one of London’s best known murals. Jones’s half is an attack on large-scale developments, while Barber focuses on Fitzrovia as a place, but who the deuce are all these ‘characters’? We can identify almost one – Arthur Fowler, masquerading as a butcher, to the bottom left. But he’s not real, nor a Fitzrovian, and he post-dates the mural by five years. Nuts. (Also, see if you can spot the hammer and sickle in the top left. Reds!) Rating 4/10. Needs a touch-up. [Time Out Top Ten London murals review]
Our Glasses, Whitfield Gardens. Twelve illuminated glass panels with full colour artwork and etchedglass, representing the history of the area and designs based uponworkshop with young people at Clubhouse Youth Centre. This involvestechnical innovations in the production of free-standing illuminatedglass panels, with light emitting from the images themselves surroundedby clear unlit glass. Launched 17th July '03. Budget: £31,000 (excludesstainless steel frames & other environment works)
Btw, Whitfield (or Whitefield!) is a personal hero of mine. I love the Garrick quote - he wishes he could get the pathos Whitfield got from one 'Oh' in his sermons.
