West Harbor, Washington Island, Wisconsin
West Harbor is a very special place for our family. It was the
first place we ever stayed while vacationing here on Washington
Island back in the mid 1950's. I think some of my fondest memories
of the Isle originate from West Harbor during that era.
Lake trout trolling became
very popular on this side of the Island during the 1960's and early
seventies because of the deeper water which lake trout need to
survive. We spent our honeymoon here in 1969 and rented a charter
boat to troll for lake trout and we *was* hooked – big
time.
Later on, in the 1980's, trolling for salmon became very
productive here on the west side of the Isle because of the bottom
structure and deeper water. There were fisherman here from all over
the Midwest as word of mouth spread regarding the excellent salmon
fishing on Washington Island.
Today, the Rock Island waters seem to be the most productive for
salmon fishing; at least, that is where most are fishing. But
I’d wager the west side of Washington Island may hold an
equal, if not better, fishery of salmon. Of course, I’m only
speaking from experience.
This hide will certainly give some geocachers fits. Hang in
there and you'll eventually find that smiley.
