Geocache Description:

This cache is the final goal of a themed series based on the DC Comics character "Batman".

A couple months ago my kids and I came across something in Antioch that made me think I ought to do a cache called "Batmobile". I didn't do it right away, though, so over the following weeks an idea formed for this Batman-themed cache series. Initially I was going to place all the caches in appropriate places around Antioch, but in the end I decided to showcase as much of East Contra Costa County as possible, limited only by my imagination and area saturation. Each placement makes sense to me, and if you examine the surrounding businesses, geography, etc. it may make sense to you. No, they're not all the best looking or most prestigious areas of our county, but it's important to me to remember they're parts of the whole.

Your ultimate goal in the series is to find this cache, the Batcave, which is at the following mystery coordinates: N37,5A.BCD W121,5W.XYZ. Each of the other eight caches in the series -- all of which can be viewed here -- contains the numeric equivalent of each letter in the coordinates. Replace the letters with the appropriate numbers, and you've found the location of Batman's secret headquarters. GOOD LUCK!

Oh, and here is a small sampling of items that may be in the caches waiting for you:

THE BATCAVE

The Batcave is the secret headquarters of fictional DC Comics superhero Batman, (the alternate identity of billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne), consisting of a series of subterranean caves beneath his residence, Wayne Manor. The cave was discovered and used long before by Wayne's ancestors as a storehouse as well as a means of transporting escaped slaves during the Civil War era. Often, Bruce Wayne is depicted as having discovered the cave as a child, falling into it during youthful exploration of the grounds. This was shown in the movies Batman Forever and Batman Begins, as a young Bruce Wayne fell through wood that was covering an abandoned water well. Much like Superman's Fortress of Solitude, the Batcave serves as a place of privacy and tranquility.

Upon his initial foray into crime-fighting, Wayne used the caves as a sanctum and to store his then-minimal equipment. As time went on, Wayne found the place ideal to create a stronghold for his war against crime, and has incorporated a plethora of equipment as well as expanding the cave for specific uses.

BLACK DIAMOND MINES REGIONAL PRESERVE

The Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is an area located in Contra Costa County, California under the administration of the East Bay Regional Parks District. The Preserve includes the remains of several coal mines and the sites of five long gone coal mining towns. The towns were Nortonville, Somersville, Stewartville, West Hartley and Judsonville. The coal mined in these areas was of a low grade, but for a time in the 19th century, was the only readily accessible and economic source in California.

The East Bay Regional Park District began acquiring land for Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in the early 1970s. Today, most of the mining district is within the Preserve's nearly 6,286 acres. The area is an ideal location for hiking, picnicking and nature study. Naturalists conduct a variety of programs relating the Preserve's natural and historic resources.

THE CACHE

This is a large camo'd ammunition can, containing a log and several comics, toys, videos and other Batman-related merchandise, and initially Travel Bug "The Bat-Man". These contents will be replenished semi-regularly, as I own quite a bit of Batman merchandise for which I have duplicate items.

This is (perhaps fittingly) the most difficult find of the series, not just because of how hard it may be to see the container, but also because of the terrain and barely-established trails leading to it. Sorry! The listed terrain level is a compromise -- depending on weather, it could be anywhere between 3 and 4. The posted coordinates indicate the best place to park, and the following links will take you to photographic clues or markers leading to GZ, if you desire them.

If you see this, you're on the right track. Or at least MY track.

Either direction may get you there, because you're staying on neither.

As soon as I saw this, I told myself Oh, yeah, the cave's in there.

And if you see this, this or this, you're practically on top of it.

Congratulations to Sobershrek on the FTF and completion of the full series!
